“As soon as we are born we begin the struggle to create, to compose, to turn matter into life; we are born in every moment.” The creative struggle and the perpetual state of productive self-realization it entails, as identified by the Greek writer and philosopher Nikos Kazantzakis in Asketike (The Saviors of God, 1922-23) provides a useful entry point to the remarkable group of works assembled by Dimitris Daskalopoulos under the rubric of the D.Daskalopoulos Collection. Taking its title from Kazantzakis’s conception of life as a “luminous interval” during which decomposition and decay are necessary prerequisites to composition and renewal, this exhibition of works drawn from the collection aims to reflect something of the dialectical nature of human experience, countering visions of despair with redemptive glimpses of hope. Although comprising only a fraction of the D.Daskalopoulos Collection as a whole, The Luminous Interval encompasses an expansive selection of challenging and thought-provoking contemporary works that will immerse visitors to the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in an overview of some of the most salient artistic developments of the past few decades. Seen together, these works evoke the potential of art to infuse our daily existence with radiant new meaning.”
