Keeping it real: An exhibition in Four Acts

Whitechapel Gallery
12 June 2010 – 22 May 2011
London, England

Curated by Dr. Achim Borchardt-Hume, Chief Curator, Whitechapel Gallery (until November 2012)

“Keeping it Real is but one approach to displaying a selection of works from one of the most significant European collections of recent art in private hands. However, it seems a pertinent one as it starts not with the person of the collector – though the four micro-exhibitions give a concise, but representative glimpse of the unique character of his collection – but with the centrality of the work of art. Tracing a particular sensibility and material engagement in a diverse range of works, Keeping it Real shows that art, rather than seeking an escape route from reality, offers a much needed space for critical reflection to grapple with the pressing issues of our time. In an age anxious to understand what still constitutes authentic experience, Keeping it Real reminds us that art does not exist outside this world, or what is commonly called reality, but is a vital part of it.”
